Food Miles Passport

A free, printable booklet for a bigger project than a single lesson: pupils track one food a day for a week, draw the journey of their longest-travelled item, and finish with a findings page and their own certificate of completion.

Cover of the Food Miles Passport booklet, styled like a travel passport with a stamp and fields for name, class and start date

Six pages, printed and folded like a little booklet - or handed out as loose sheets.

What's inside

The passport is built as a week-long arc rather than a single worksheet, so pupils see their own data build up day by day instead of filling in a table all at once:

  • Cover - name, class and start date, styled like a real passport with a stamp.
  • How it works - five simple steps and a worked example, so pupils can get started without needing the teacher to explain it each day.
  • This week's log - a seven-day table (Monday to Sunday) for one food item a day, plus longest/shortest/total-miles boxes to fill in once the week is done.
  • Map it out - a full drawing page for pupils to sketch the journey of their furthest-travelled food, however they imagine it got here.
  • My findings - three reflection prompts on what surprised them and what they'd want to find out next.
  • Certificate of completion - a fill-in certificate for finishing the week, with space for a teacher's signature.

How to run it as a project

Works well handed out on a Monday as a week-long homework project, with two minutes at the start or end of each day for pupils to check that day's food and fill in a row - no lesson time needed beyond the first explanation. Equally, it can anchor a standalone topic week: open with the Where Does Our Food Come From lesson, hand out the passport to fill in through the week, then close with the drawing and findings pages as a final lesson. The certificate at the end gives it a natural, satisfying finish line - pupils genuinely like having something to take home.

Best suited to KS2 (roughly ages 7-11), though older pupils can go deeper on the findings page. No sign-up, no data collected - everything stays on paper, in the pupil's own hands.
