Food Miles in the Classroom

We know a fair few classrooms use this calculator already, so this page pulls together a few ways to build a lesson or activity around it. Everything linked below is free, works on a shared classroom screen or on pupils' own devices, and needs no sign-up. Pick and adapt whichever fits your group best - most of these work across a wide age range with a bit of steering, from a simple "guess then check" for younger pupils through to a full data-analysis task for older ones.

Food miles sits nicely across several subjects at once: geography (trade, transport, global supply chains), science and sustainability (emissions, environmental impact), maths (real data - averages, comparisons, unit conversion), and citizenship/PSHE (the choices behind what we buy). The activities below lean into whichever of those fits your lesson.

Track your own lunch

Before the lesson, ask pupils to note down two or three things from their lunch or a recent shop - a piece of fruit, a snack, whatever's easy to check the packaging for. In class, look up the country of origin together and run each one through the food miles calculator on the homepage. Simplest version: just read off the distance and talk about what surprised people. Extended version: pupils log their own results and the class builds a shared table or chart of everyone's items.

Compare five foods

Pick five foods pupils will recognise - bananas, apples, coffee, rice, potatoes work well as a spread from "well-travelled" to "often local" - and look each one up on Browse All Foods or its own page (e.g. /food/banana) to see the average distance travelled and where it typically comes from. Good as a simple ranking exercise for younger pupils ("put these in order from shortest to longest journey, then check"), or as the basis for a short written comparison for older ones - why does one travel further than another?

Where does our food come from? (geography)

Browse All Countries lists every country the calculator has data for, each with its own page showing what's been tracked from there. Good as a mapping activity - pick a handful of countries, find what's been tracked from each, and mark them on a world map or plot the rough distances. Works as a straightforward locating-countries task for younger pupils, or paired with the emissions figures on each page for a more analytical look at trade patterns for older ones.

Working with real data (maths)

The Leaderboard page is a ready-made real dataset - the most-tracked foods and journeys, with distances and totals from actual public submissions rather than made-up textbook numbers. Useful for practising averages, unit conversion (miles to km), or simple comparison/ranking questions, and because the numbers are real and change over time, two classes doing the same task a year apart won't get identical answers.

Does it actually matter? (discussion/citizenship)

Once pupils have a feel for the distances involved, What Does The Research Actually Say? and Are Food Miles Still Relevant? both look at how much distance really matters next to other factors like what kind of food it is. These work well as a follow-up reading and discussion task for older pupils - the short version for younger ones is simply: how far something travels is only part of the story, and what kind of food it is often matters more.

A note on the data

Distances and country-of-origin data come from real visitor submissions rather than an official trade dataset, so treat totals as illustrative (useful for comparison and discussion) rather than as a precise statistic to quote elsewhere. It's exactly this real, slightly messy quality that makes it a decent stand-in for genuine data-handling practice.
